David Breashears to lead team in Kala Patthar attempt a few days before us!

Wow! No really, wow! Acclaimed film maker and hard-core mountain guy David Breashears is set to lead a Destination Himalaya team to Kala Patthar/Base Camp the week before we arrive. To mountain geeks, that’s the Star Trek equivalent of running into William Shatner at the gas station. It’s like if a hockey fan happened to sit next to Wayne Gretzky at a movie.
From the DH web site, it looks like his team’s summit attempt will happen on Oct. 10 or 11, about 5 days before ours. That means we’ll be passing by him at some point on his way back down! Nerd city!
Aside from climbing Everest 5 times and tranmitting the first live pictures from the summit of Everest in 1985, Breashears is best known for his IMAX films of Everest and Kilimanjaro.
Maybe Dan will nerd out and ask David Breashears for intel on the route up. Ha! Oh man!
Here’s his website, his photography is out of this world: http://www.davidbreashears.com/

In other news, wish us luck this weekend. We’ll be doing an overnight at the Carter Hut in Pinkham Notch, with an eye on bagging Carter Dome either Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. We’ll post all about it early next week. Ta ta!

“The Star Trek equivalent of running into William Shatner at the gas station,” I like that. On the topic of brushes with Mountaineering celebs…Being a self-absorbed heathen, I wasn't properly impressed at the time but in high school I worked for the first American to climb Mt. Everest, Jim Whittaker.

  2. That's not bad, fairly high on the mountain nerd chart! What was the job?
