Wordless Wednesday: Yike! Now we’ve done it!

Our first adventure of the 2012 season is confirmed. Dan and Meena will be part of a expedition to summit Mt. Katahdin (Baxter Peak) in Maine this August!

At 5,268 feet, the mountain is both the highpoint of Maine and a summit on the New England 4,000 footer list. With luck, over the course of the several days we’ll be in Baxter State Park, we’ll also make attempts at Hamlin and North Brother peaks, both on the 4,000 footer list.

But the most exciting part of the hike will be the picture above. Knife Edge is a one mile strip of rock between Pamola Peak and Baxter Peak. For about 3/10 of a mile the trail is 3 feet wide, with a drop off on either side. Not a place to be intimidated by heights!

We’ll start a new Katahdin category and make sure to document our journey! If any of our readers have been to Katahdin, we’d love to hear your thoughts and advice!

  1. We have Katahdin on our very short list of possible summer trips this year. Surely we don’t have as much experience as you guys … I look forward to reading more about this.

    • Excellent Teresa! Let us know when your trip gets finalized and we’ll be sure to swap info as it gets closer! The team will be attempting some big White Mountain training hikes this summer (Presi Traverse / Bonds overnighter). Keep your eye on EKP for updates and let us know if you wish to join in the fun!

We look forward to visiting the park and climbing the Knife Edge this summer, too. I like to go up the Knife rather than down. There is one spot beyond the Saddle (off Pamola) that is a bit tricky for shorter people to reach. My first trip across, I was mostly on four feet (ah, hands and feet). The next time I was tri-peddled. And the next time I walked upright. Are you going in one car or two or more?

    • Great Ellen, three times you’ve been there! Tell us more! Do you have any pics, we’d love to show them. Right now, we’re not sure of the transportation situation. I think there’ll be 8 of us so likely two or three cars.

Hate to rain on your parade, the knifes edge is 1.2 miles long

Katadhin is a great hike. My son and I did it as a father/son trip with two other dads/sons. Limited access to the trail parking lot. we heard that people camp out by the gate to get into the park to get trailside parking. We started from one of the few camps inside Baxter but still headed out like 4am so we could have a spot on the trail-head of choice. Our trip leader was experienced and a local – co worker for me in Maine. Knife Edge – beautiful – don’t remember speaking a word during our entire traverse of it. hmmmn.
I’ll have to rummage around and see if I can find some photos for you. I was not lugging a pro camera, so don’t have high expectations of results.
